Judging the quality of an authentic Persian rug

Traditions
The production of Persian rugs can be compared with wine production in France. Some villages and commercial regions are noticeable because of their character and quality.
However, the situation is constantly changing and a name cannot guarantee the true history of the rug.

A lengthy process

Persian rugs are woven, regardless of the production method - from wool, cotton or silk.
Wool is used in the pile, which accounts for approximately 95% of the rug. The quality of the thread can vary dramatically. The wool should preferably be long and free of synthetic materials.
Cotton is used primarily for the base of the weave of the rug. Silk rugs are the most densely knotted, elegant and expensive rugs you can find. A rug made entirely of silk has a silk weave and weft.

The Tabriz Mahi dining-room rug of 2 x 3 meters has, on average 3,000,000 knots in total; all placed there buy hand.

As a skilled knotter can complete approx. 10,000 knots per day, it will take them 300 days (excluding weekends and holidays) to make the rug.
