In 1598,
Shah Abbas the Great of the Safaviden dynasty named
Isfahan in the southwest part of the country, capital of Iran.
In the 17´th century Isfahan was one of the most magnificent
and richest cities in the world. Rugs from Isfahan are counted
among the finest and most expensive rugs knotted in Iran today.
The knot density ranges from 600.000 to 1 million knots/sq
m. Isfahan rugs is generally made of a very fine wool and
silk in the pile, warp is silk and weft is cotton. Generally
floral designs with a medallion or all-over design, with a
gracefulness suggestive of Persian miniature paintings (e.g.
arabesques, spirals, palm-leaves, vines, artistic animal or
plant motifs.) the colour scheme is among the richest of all
Persian rugs. The most common background colours are beige,
light blue or dark blue and red.
